An important aspect of this and other parts of the Travel Portal is that wherever possible, we link you to the official web site.  For example, rather than simply have a page ABOUT the British Museum, we try to LINK TO the British Museum.

London Restaurants Open for Christmas Dinner and on Christmas Day.

The first grouping below represent some of the larger online Guides to London. We don't see any clear winner but several are excellent. Our advice is to look through them all, as well as our direct links to places of interest, which appear below the guides listed below.

General Web Guides for London (... also see Greater London)
Guide A London Guide
Nicely organized and attractive web site.
Guide Best Read London Guide
Based on the book of the same name, it's no surprise that there's lots of information to be found here.
Guide Virtual London
A virtual soup London information, this soup has nearly the entire kitchen sink. However, at times, it's navigation is confusing. For example, a click on "London Life" brings up an online magazine with guide to restaurants in Wales. Whatever where they thinking? I guess Clifford Stoll wasn't wrong about context being in short supply on the Internet.

  Explore London
Easy to navigate and fun to use, this site offers a virtual tour, with wonderful photographs. One of the best uses of "frames" in web design we have seen. You can either navigate by map, or drop down "places" menu listing, or better still, you can simply open the index to all places.
Guide LondonNet
This site all the usual information and then some. It would have been a clear winner if they had included direct links to the places of interest that were already online, of which, as you will see, are numerous.

Major Museums
and Galleries
Many sites are bold enough to tell which museums and galleries you must not miss. Actually, when you have just a short amount of time to stay in London, you probably won't be sending all your time in museums and galleries, especially if it's your first time. We won't mention our favorite. The list above will give you some idea as to how you will prioritize.
More Museums and Galleries
Churches and Cathedrals
We will stick our neck out and say it’s worth a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral and to Westminster Abbey. Try not to visit in "Bermuda shorts" and sneakers. Casual dress is fine, but the Bermuda shorts and sneakers are a little tiresome if not downright depressing after awhile.
London Theatres Online
We can't imagine not going to the theatre during a trip to London. You shouldn't either. Only a few cities in the world can give London theatre a run for the money, and even then, the venue is never quite as varied or as rich (Dublin's theatre life may be the one exception). We didn't include all the theatres in Greater London, as many of them were not online.

Beware! The following is not a list of bargain hotels. Some may provide a good value (for the money) but most on this list are not here because they are "affordable" or "inexpensive" If you are looking for that, check some of our other links (not these). Also worthy of note, the food served at some of these hotels is very good, but pricey. May we suggest that you take a look at some of these fine London Hotels, and then shop around to see if you can find a better rate on the one you like. Some are quite small and in demand, so we don't hold out a lot of hope you will find a deal for most of what's listed here. Although anything is possible, and you should give it a try before surrendering. If nothing else, have fun looking through the list ... just for kicks. It's fun to window shop ... even though it may be too pricey for you now.
